The decorative Suzanis from Uzbekistan are rich in symbolism; employing floral, natural and geometric patterns to create meanings that vary with tribe, family and region that it belongs to. Each creation is characterized by its creator, the artisan. The Suzanis come from the regions of Samarkand, Bukhara, Tashkent, Shahrisyabz, Fergana and Nurata; each region with its unique color, pattern, the material and style of stitches used. Flowers, the moon and the sun are often used as popular patterns in suzanis. The colors themself have meanings orange and yellow relates to knowledge, blue represent the sky, green the plants and spring and red the fire. Suzanis were traditionally the most popular folk art in Uzbekistan, made by Central Asian brides as a part of their dowry, to be presented to the groom on the wedding night.
