3'10" x 6'10" (117 x 210 cm) Turkish Sun Faded Rug, Green, Brown & Beige
Measuring 3'10" x 6'10" (117 x 210 cm), this rectangle shaped Green, Beige and Brown Vintage Overdyed Handmade Turkish Rug is a versatile flooring option for any room. Its area of 26.19 ft² is just enough so that it can fit in a designated space and it is large enough to pack a powerful decorating punch. The absence of rug pile showcases the underlying floral pattern beautifully yet subtly so it is not overpowering and because toned down shades and muted colors can easily blend in with your existing décor. Handmade in Turkey in the 1960s, this overdyed vintage rug is made of wool pile on cotton foundation, which makes it more resistant to wear and tear.
Origin of Turkish Overdyed Rugs
Turkish overdyed rugs are originally handmade using organically dyed wool and cotton blend. Decades ago, these fabulous creations were gifted as wedding presents to the bride’s family from the bridegroom’s parents. Over the years, these rugs were forgotten about and they lay discarded in a room. However, that did not diminish their beauty. At some point, in a joyful rejuvenation of a traditional art form, these forgotten rugs were re-purposed as distressed rugs.
A Look At The Overdyeing Process
Only antique or vintage Anatolian rugs are chosen to be overdyed. Antique rugs are those produced before the 1920s and vintage rugs are those created between the 1920s and 1970s.
In the first step, the pile is sheared or trimmed down. Depending on the desired effect, the pile may be trimmed just a little bit or it could be sheared down completely. This gives the rug a more antiquated fashionable look.
The sheared rugs are then deep-washed, which is a specialized process that strips the rug of most of its bright colors but leaves slight undertones remaining in place. Some rugs are first dyed to remove all traces of its original color but with the original patterns still visible. It’s like having a brand new coloring book just waiting for an expert to fill in the colors. This is done by soaking the rugs in pools of boiling water with high quality textile dyes that are imported from Germany.
The dyeing technique and the time that the rug is left in the dye varies, depending on desired coloration. The rug may have to be dipped in multiple vats of dye to achieve a unique shade or for a deeper tone of the same color.
After the rugs have absorbed the dyes they are hung out to dry.
Turkish overdyed rugs come in a fascinating range of sizes, patterns and color combinations. We have a large and very diverse stock of these fascinating vintage rugs available in a wide range of colors each of which comes in three different shades.
